Disclaimer: documentation for informational purposes only. No warranty is implied. Following these steps may lead to personal injjury, death, dismemberment, mayhem, or voiding your vehicle's manufacturing warranty. Now, with that out of the way...
It is highly recommended that you follow this procedure with the engine cool. Due to the proximity to the exhaust manifold (both the V6 and L4 engines), you may horribly burn yourself if you attempt to do this on a hot engine.
Tools needed:
Phillips Screwdriver, #2 tip
Slotted Screwdriver, 1/4" tip
Total estimated time:
30 minutes
Step 1:
The area circled in red is the business area you will be working with. The area
framed in green is the trim cover over the air filter housing. The area framed
in blue is the fresh air duct for the air filter housing. Remove the trim cover
and the section of duct highlighted.
Step 2:
Remove hose C from air filter housing by turning it a bit until it comes free
(90 deg rotation, approx). Remove clips D (visible) and E, behing housing (You
will need the slotted screwdriver for clips E. Pull component A off of the air
filter housing.
FYI, B is the slush screen,
whose function is to ostensibly keep snow and ice out of the airbox. There is
some controversy as to the utility of this screen. Me personally, I believe
it's there for a good reason- in winter, it keeps snow and ice from coming into
the air box. Mine was encrusted with salt accumulated from driving around this
winter.
Step 3:
Remove clip G from connector F. Unplug the connector from this device.
Step 4:
You should now be able to move things out of the way and get something that
looks like this:
Remove the air filter and set aside. Vacuum out the interior of the air filter housing and the slush screen.
Step 5:
Remove the slush screen if it is paticularly dirty. There is a single phillips
screw (H) holding down this screen- this is a view from inside the airbox- the
screw is on the front-right of the air box, the slush screen is labed J.
Once the slush screen is removed, wash it with warm water. It should look something like this:
Reinstall the slush screen, if you feel so inclined.
Step 6:
Drop in the new filter. In my case, I was dropping in a K & N air filter,
part number 33-2125.
The old filter was considerably taller than the new K & N replacement. It's ok- it still fits properly.
Step 7:
Reassemble everything the way you found it, and place stickers where appropriate:
